Visiting Hobbiton without a car

You don't need a rental car to see Hobbiton. The set is in the countryside outside Matamata, so the trick is getting yourself to the region and then to the tour departure point on time.

Getting to the region

Intercity coaches connect many North Island towns, including Matamata. Check the coach company's current timetable, because services are limited and may not line up with your tour time.

Organised day tours from Auckland and Rotorua include transport and usually the tour ticket, on a fixed schedule.

From Matamata town to the set

Matamata town and Hobbiton Movie Set are separate places, with farmland in between. Check the departure point shown on your ticket from hobbitontours.com, because that is where you need to be. If you're staying in town, a Matamata taxi or our Matamata to Hobbiton transfer gets you there.

Door to door, start to finish

A private transfer removes every connection: we pick you up from your hotel, Airbnb, airport or cruise terminal anywhere in the North Island, and can wait during your tour and take you on afterwards. You see the exact price before entering any contact details, and pay by card.

Travelling with luggage? Tell us how many bags you have so we send a vehicle with room for them.

Hobbit Cabs is independent and provides transport only. Hobbiton Movie Set tour tickets are sold by the official operator.
