How to get to Hobbiton from Auckland

Hobbiton Movie Set sits on farmland outside Matamata in the Waikato, south of Auckland. There is no train to the set, so most visitors either drive, join an organised tour, or book a private transfer.

The road south

From Auckland the usual way is south on State Highway 1 through Bombay and Pōkeno, then down the Waikato Expressway past Huntly and Hamilton. Near Cambridge or Hamilton you leave the expressway and head east through farm country on SH1B or SH27 towards Matamata, with Hobbiton on Buckland Road, Hinuera.

Traffic leaving Auckland in the morning peak and returning on Friday or Sunday afternoons can add a lot of time, so build in a buffer. Our Auckland to Hobbiton page shows the live drive time and price for each vehicle.

Your three main options

Self-drive gives you freedom, but it means a long day behind the wheel on the left side of the road, often after a long-haul flight.

Organised coach tours bundle transport and tour tickets and run to a fixed timetable shared with other passengers.

A private transfer collects you from your own address, travels at your pace and can wait for you and bring you back. Prices are per vehicle, not per person, which suits families and groups.

Book your tour ticket first

Hobbiton Movie Set tours are sold only by the official operator at hobbitontours.com. Book your ticket first, check the departure point and time printed on it, then book transport to arrive with time to spare. Our route pages suggest a pickup time once you enter your tour time.

Day trip or overnight?

Auckland to Hobbiton and back is a long day. Many visitors prefer to break the trip with a night in Matamata, Cambridge, Hamilton or Rotorua and carry on next day. You can book a one-way transfer, or add a return trip on any date.

Hobbit Cabs is independent and provides transport only. Hobbiton Movie Set tour tickets are sold by the official operator.
